What Is Sabong — and Why Filipinos Love It

Sabong, or cockfighting, is one of the oldest and most deeply rooted traditions in the Philippines. Long before basketball courts and betting shops lined the streets of Cebu and Quezon City, Filipinos were gathering around the cockpit arena — the sabungan — to watch roosters compete in bouts that last only minutes but carry enormous cultural weight.

The sport is legal and regulated in the Philippines under PAGCOR's oversight framework, and it draws passionate crowds from Luzon to Mindanao. Major derbies like the World Slasher Cup in Araneta Coliseum attract breeders and bettors from across Southeast Asia. Online sabong has extended that tradition to millions of Filipinos who can't always make it to the arena in person.

At phrelx, we've built our cockfighting platform to honor that tradition — with high-definition live streams, transparent odds, and a betting interface that feels as natural as calling out your bet to the kristo at your local sabungan.

Sabong Glossary for New Bettors

Know the lingo before you place your first bet

Meron is the favored rooster — the one with more money bet on it, indicated by lower (negative) odds. Wala is the underdog, carrying higher (positive) odds and a bigger potential payout. Betting Wala is riskier but more rewarding when it wins. The terms come from Tagalog: meron means "there is" (implying the favorite has the edge) and wala means "none" (the underdog).

The kristo is the traditional bet-taker at a live sabungan. He stands in the arena and uses hand signals to accept bets from the crowd — arms outstretched like a cross, hence the name. On phrelx, the kristo's role is replaced by the digital betting interface, but the spirit of the transaction is the same: fast, transparent, and final.

These refer to the type of blade or spur attached to the rooster's leg. A gaff is a long, curved metal spur common in international derbies. A tari is a shorter, sharper blade used in many Philippine provincial fights. Bulang-bulang (or "naked heel") fights use no blade at all — roosters fight with their natural spurs only. Each style affects fight duration and betting dynamics.

A derby is a multi-fight cockfighting tournament where breeders enter roosters in a series of bouts. The breeder whose roosters win the most fights takes the prize. Famous Philippine derbies include the World Slasher Cup (Araneta Coliseum, Manila), the Cebu Super Derby, and the Davao International Derby. phrelx streams major derbies live and offers fight-by-fight betting throughout each event.

A draw (or empate) is declared when both roosters are unable to continue fighting within the allotted time, or when both roosters die simultaneously. Draw bets pay out at very high odds (typically +750 to +900) because they are rare. On phrelx, draw outcomes are settled automatically based on the official arena result.

Sabong Betting Tips from Pinoy Experts

Sharpen your edge before the next fight card drops

Study the Breeder's Track Record

Top breeders from Batangas, Cebu, and Davao have documented win rates. A rooster from a proven bloodline entering as Wala can be excellent value — the odds don't always reflect breeding quality.

Watch the Pre-Fight Weigh-In

Weight class matters. A rooster giving up significant weight to its opponent faces a real disadvantage. phrelx displays weight data for each fight — use it before locking in your bet.

Understand Line Movement

If the Meron line moves from -130 to -160 quickly, sharp money is coming in on the favorite. Conversely, a line moving toward Wala suggests informed bettors see value on the underdog.

Manage Your Bankroll Per Derby

A typical derby has 8–12 fights. Allocate a fixed budget per derby — say ₱1,000 — and split it across fights rather than going all-in on one bout. Variance is high in sabong.

Blade Type Affects Fight Length

Gaff fights tend to last longer; tari fights are often decided in seconds. Shorter fights mean less time for a comeback — factor this into your risk tolerance when betting underdogs.

Never Chase Losses

Sabong is fast-paced and emotionally charged. If you've hit your session limit, step away. phrelx's responsible gaming tools let you set a loss cap before you start — use them.
